b"Let's Get S.A.L.T.Y.!E ach year, the West Palm Beach Fishing Clubs (WPBFC) charitable affiliate, the Palm Beach County Fishing Foundation, takes to the water to help cultivate the next generation of knowl-edgeable and responsible young anglers in the S.A.L.T.Y. Youth Fishing Program.Theres no better way to learn how to fish than doing it hands-on.On our last go-around, participants encountered calm seas and a hot summertime snapper bite offshore, which always make for a fun day and a successful event. S.A.L.T.Y. continues to further young anglers passion for the wonderful saltwater resources Palm Beach County has to offer, while also strengthening the bond between the kids involved and their parent/chaperone. S.A.L.T.Y. participants gathered at the historic WPBFC on a Friday night, in preparation of fishing the next morning. With the assistance of helpful volunteers, the kids learned knot tying, sardine rigging, how to tie a guppy rig and they spooled up their new PENN Fishing spinner combos with 15 lb. ANDE monofilament.Every kid received a rod and other useful tackle and gear as part of the program! The following Saturday morning was an opportunity to put their new skills and rigs they tied themselves to the test.My son and I had a great time. Some youth anglers dialed in skills as simple as how-to properly fight a fish; one of the best exercises for this is hooking into big bonitas on a spinning tackle with light line, and there were plenty of hungry fish around biting jigs descending through the water column. Fishing is a hobby that can be learned at a young age and is a healthy outdoor activity that can be enjoyed for a lifetime.A big thanks goes out to the WPBFC volunteers who inspired and worked with the S.A.L.T.Y. kids. And of course, a special thanks to community partners like the Marine Industries Association of Palm Beach County for making these youth fishing programs possible. It's an extraordinary priviledge for us to be able to better connect kids to the water! This program is dedicated to late WPBFC board member Don Hap Wilson, who was a passionate angler and valued the mentor-ship required to teach fishing skills to the next generation.
