Handle your baits with care using de-hookers to take fresh caught baits off Sabiki rigs. • Baits of choice: live threadfin her- ring, pilchards and silver mullet are top producing baits fished near structure like dock pilings, bridge fenders and large boats moored at their docks. The latter being especially produc- tive if there is a depression beneath the moored vessel, which often is the case as a result of prop dredging from the boat when in comes and goes from its berth. • Lure of choice: when using artifi- cial lures George uses the 5-inch Gulp! jerk shad on a 3/8 ounce jig head. Works great on snook and tarpon. • George recommends fishing hi-vis braided lines. With hi-vis lines you can often see the bite before you feel it just by watching the line. He only fishes braid when fishing heavy structure. • George uses J-hooks for his snook in heavy cover, in close quarters. He says that with his heavy cover snook technique a circle hook is not as effective because you must aggres- sively set the hook immediately. There is not enough time for a circle hook to work properly in this situation. The quick hook set prevents snook from becoming gut hooked. He uses circle hooks for tarpon fishing and when he is bottom fishing for snook in deep inlets. • Be ready for the strike: anglers must be prepared to strike by watch- ing their line and keeping their rod tip perpendicular to where their bait is, “Rod Tip Away” as he says. He in- structs his anglers to give no quarter and reel as hard and fast as possible when the bite occurs. He even goes so far as to having them run up the length of the boat if it helps them gain leverage on the fish to successfully pull it from its lair. • For heavy cover snook fishing use tight drags and heavy line. He uses a Homer Rhode loop knot to connect all hooks and lures to his leaders. • Fish areas where there are some signs of activity.
