b'Celebrating 86 years of History.W est Palm Beac The Silver Sailfish Derby was established by the West Palm Beach Fishing West P alm BeachhF ishing Club Club (WPBFC) in January 1935 to promote the region and aid its struggling Fishing Clubcharter boat fleet during the Great Depression era.While structured quite differ-Board of Directors: ently today, the event remains the worlds oldest sailfish tournament. The Derbys longstanding Pete Schulz, Chairman support of billfish conservation has been its hallmark.It is credited with advancing the catch Tricia Borsch and release ethic that has been embraced by sportsmen around the globe.Perhaps the Derbys Chester Brewer most notable conservation contribution is the development of the red release pennant in the Barry Brimacomb late 1930s.Today, the pennant is recognized around the world as a way to signify a sailfish Robert Broadway release.The Derby was also among the first to incorporate game fish tagging for scientific Bob Frevert purposes into a competitive format and encouraged the use of circle hooks long before it was John Jolley mandated by the National Marine Fisheries Service.
