78thannualSilverSailfiShDerby6onthenalday.Thewindclockedaroundtoduesouthandblewasustained25to30mphthroughouttheentireday.Despitethestrongwindfewhadtroublerunningwiththeseaastheyheadedtothenorthernboundarylinewheretheshwere.Withinthersttenminutesofshingsail-shwerebeingreportedtoDerbyheadquarters.Arealhorseracedevelopedseveralhoursintothefinalday.AftercatchingtwomoreshinthemorningDoingItAllheldtheslimmestofleadsbasedonthetimeoftheirlastre-leasewithatournamenttotalof14sails.MeanwhileTeamMissAnniewashavinganexcellentdayadding6morereleasestotheirscoreforatotalof14sailshaswell.Sixotherboatswerewithinjustfourshoftheleadwithjustafewhoursremaininginthecontest.Asthelinesoutofthewatertimeapproachedthethoughtofthereturntripintoaheavyheadseabecameaconcernfortheboatsatthetopoftheleaderboard.Derbyrulesgiveteamsninetyminutesaftertheshingdayendstoreturnscoresheets.Stayingfarnorthtothebitterendandtryingtocatchonemoreshbecameagambleconsideringtheseaconditions.EventhoughtheywereintheprimeshingzoneTeamMissAnniemadethestrategicdecisiontocuttheirshingdayalittleshortinordertogetbacktotournamentheadquarterssafelyintimetoturnintheirscoresheet.Itwouldprovetobeanexcellentdecision.Whentheshingdayconcludedat2p.m.boatsbeganpayingthepriceastheyracedbackinroughseas.ThetournamentleaderDoingItAllwasoneofthem.Withalittlemorethanonehourremainingbeforethescoresheetcutofftimetheyfoundthemselvesbrokedown.Athrottlecontrolmodulehadsnappedoffundertheconsole.Tournamentrulesallowforscoresheetsfromabrokedownboattobedeliveredbyanothervesselaslongasthatves-selisabletodeliverthesheetbytherequiredtime.Inademonstrationofgreatsportsmanshipfellowcompeti-torsTeamGoodCallledbyCaptainMattAlligoodofferedtohelp.WithtimerunningoutthescoresheetandtournamentobserveraboardDoingItAllwastransferredtotheGoodCall.InfacttosavetimeandeliminateanyriskofboatscrashingintooneTopTagTeamMissBrittHighDailyAnglerDay2RickBurton4thPlaceOverallteamWrenegadeanotherintheheavyseasDerbyobserverRichEbersolddoveoffthestrandedboatandswamtotheotherboat.ItjustseemedliketherightthingtodosincetimewassocriticalsaidEbersold.DespiteavaliantattemptGoodCallwasunabletomakeitbackintime.Asaresultthe2shcaughtbyTeamDoingItAllweredisqualiedrearrangingtheleaderboard.Iwisheditwouldhaveworkedoutdiffer-entlybuteverythinghappensforareason.ThoseguysonGoodCallwentaboveandbeyondforus.WereallyappreciatetheireffortscommentedMarkLambfromDoingItAll.Itwasadra-maticnishtotheDerby.TheDerbyeetregisteredatotalof63sailsonthenalday.TeamMissAnniewithanglersMarkDonohueTomSmithFrankNapuranoandBarryWeshnakclaimedtopdailyboathonorswith6releasesandwontheTopOverallTeamawardwithatotalof14releases.AbsolutJoyanglerSusanMcCartofSarasotawasthetopdailyanglerwith4releasesondaythree.McCartalsoearnedtheTopLadyAnglerawardpresentedinmemoryofRoseHamppforposting6sail-shreleasesoverall.TheMiamibasedTeamJichiledbyCaptainGeneLebronnishedsecondoverallwith13releases.TeamDoingItAllnishedthirdoverallwith12releasesandalsoclaimedtheTopSmallBoataward.TeamWrenegadefromPalmBeachledbyCaptainJimGarnernishedfourthoverallontimewith11sailshreleases.TheprestigiousMrs.HenryR.ReatrophyforthetopindividualanglertheoldesttrophyincompetitivesailshingwenttoMissAnnieanglerMarkDonohueofWestPalmBeachwith8individualsailshreleasesontime.AnglerRobLaneaWPBFClifetimememberfromChesterNewJerseyplacedsecondoverallindividuallywith8releases.RickyCaraquetaonJichiplacedthirdoverallandJohnDuvalshingaboardtheProPayrollwasthefourthplaceangleroverall.TeamMissBrittanglersCarlLindnerandDanielGrifnledbyCaptainRayRosherofMiamitookhometheTopTagTeamawardfortaggingatotalof8sailshwithBillshFoundationtags.CaptainRandyYatesoftheMissAnnieearnedtheTopCaptaintrophy.
