AportionoftheLakeWorthLagoonnowcoveredinmuckwillberebornasathrivingecosystemofseagrassbedsandmangrovesthatwillnurtureshoystersandwildlifeandattractanglersandkayakers.ThatisthegoaloftheGrassyFlatsrestora-tionprojectscheduledtobeginnextspring.TheprojectislocatedonthelagoonseastsideintheareabetweenSouthernBoulevardandLakeAvenueofftheTownofPalmBeach.TheprojectisacooperativeeffortsupportedbytheU.S.FishandWildlifeServiceUSFWSNationalOceanicandAtmosphericAdministrationFloridaFishandWildlifeConservationCommis-sionFloridaDepartmentofEnvi-ronmentalProtectionPalmBeachCountyEnvironmentalResourcesManagementtheMarineIndus-triesAssociationofPalmBeachCountyandtheWestPalmBeachFishingClubWPBFC.FishingClubMemberswillbeplayinganactiveroleinthisprojectwhenitcomestimetoplantmangrovesprobablysometimeinlate2014.WPBFCmemberswillbeaskedtohelpmonitortheprojectasitmaturesaswell.TheLakeWorthLagoonisthelargestestuaryinPalmBeachCountystretchingfromNorthPalmBeachtoOceanRidgeandseparatedfromtheAtlanticOceanbySingerIslandandPalmBeachIsland.TheGrassyFlatsprojectwillcapa12acreareaofmucksedimentwithapproxi-mately48000cubicyardsofsand.Twoislandswillbeconstructedthatwillbeseededwithnearly3000redmangrovesand25000cordgrassplugs.Approximately5300tonsoflimestonerockwillbeusedtostabilizetheislandswhichwillalsoprovideasuitablesubstrateforoysterrecruitmentandgrowth.SeagrassesavitalcomponenttoanyhealthyestuaryareexpectedtonaturallymoveintotherestoredClubVolunteersNeededforLagoonRestorationWorksandyshallowsaswell.TheUSFWSwillspend777000ontheGrassyFlatsprojectwithstateandlocalpartnersproviding351000inpublicfundsandin-kindservicestomatchthefederalcontribu-tion.Theprojectwillalsoreceive110000fromFDEPthroughNOAAsCoralReefConservationProgram.PalmBeachCountyissupplyingmostofthelocaldol-larsfortheproject.Wehaveseentangibleben-etsinaveryshortperiodtimewithotherrestorationprojectstheclubhasbeeninvolvedwithsaidWPBFCPresidentTomTwyfordThebirdsfiddlercrabsoystersandmangrovesblossomedandtheshwerentfarbehind.Withrecentim-pactsfromexcessivefreshwaterdischargesthisyearthelagoonneedsallthehelpitcanget.TheFishingClubwillbelook-ingforstrongvolunteersupportfromitsmembershipwhenwegetintotheplantingphaseoftheproject.Volunteerop-portunitieslikethisareideallysuitedforFish-ingClubfami-liesandkidswhoneedcom-munityservicehoursfortheirschool.Icantthinkofabetterwaytocultivatethenextgenera-tionofmarineresourcestew-ards.WPBFCmembersinterestedinvolunteeringforthisandotherrestorationprojectsshouldcalltheFishingClubat561832-6780andasktobeaddedtotheclubsmangroveplantingvolunteerlist.FishingClubmembersprovidedvolunteersupportwiththeSouthCoverestorationproject.MoresupportwillbeneededforGrassyFlats.BrailleClubSeeksFishingClubVolunteersTheBrailleClubofPalmBeachCountyasocialclubforblindandvisuallyimpairedindividualshascontactedtheWestPalmBeachFishingClubaskingforsomeassistance.BrailleClubpresidentLarryMcDowellisseekingseveralsightedvolunteerstoassistwithashingdayatalandbasedlocationliketheJunoBeachFishingPier.LarrywouldliketoplanaweekdayeventthatintroducessomeoftheBrailleClubmemberstobasicshingpractices.Volunteerswouldbeexpectedtoassistvisuallyimpairedadultswithbaitinghookscastingarodandlandingsh.Someofourmembershavenevershedbefore.Fishingisoneofthoseactivitiesthatcanbeenjoyedbyourmembers.WearealwayslookingforopportunitiestogetoutsidecommentedMcDowell.WestPalmBeachFishingClubmembersinterestedinassistingtheBrailleClubwithashingdayshouldcontactLarryMcDowellat561667-5500or561585-2301.TheFishingClubwillprovideanytacklenecessaryfortheouting. 6WestPalmBeachFishingClubmembernewsMollyFlemingInductedintoIWFAHallofFameWPBFClifetimememberMollyFlemingwasinductedintotheInternationalWomensFishingAssociationIWFAHallofFameearlierthisyearinPalmBeach.TheIWFAisagroupofwomenwholovetoshandenjoythecamaraderieofthesport.Theclubwasformedin1955topromotewomensshingandovertheyearshasbecomeoneofthemostprestigiouswomensshingclubsintheworld.Mollyisonlythe31stpersontobeelectedtotheHallofFameintheclubshistory.TheIWFAhonoredMollyforheroutstandingcontributionsovertheyearsbeginningwithhermembershipin1972.ShehasservedontheIWFAboardfor12yearschairingvariouspositionsincludingAwardsYearbookandTournamentsvariousfundraisingeventsandcurrentlyservesasHistorian.MollyhasparticipatedinandwonmanyoftheIWFAtournamentsandalsohaschairedthem.AsalighttackleexpertMollyisastrongadvocateforcatchandreleaseandethicalangling.ShealsoisalongtimesupporteroftheWestPalmBeachFishingClubschar-itablefoundationtheIGFAandTheBillshFoundation.RecentlyMollywonfourprestigiousanglingawardsattheSailshClubofPalmBeachtheDonWilsonOverallClubChampionAnnSodahlLightTackleChampionSailshReleaseAwardandtheFlemingAllFloridaPointsAward.TheWPBFChasenjoyedaverycloserelationshipwiththeIWFAsinceitsbeginning.CongratulationsMollyweareveryproudofyouMollyFlemingandfellowHall-of-FamerKayRybovichoneofthefoundingmembersoftheIWFA.Oneofthenewestsportstohitthecollegecampusinrecentyearsistournamentbassshing.WPBFCmem-berChrisCardellaofDelrayBeachisamongthosewhohavetakentheirpassionforshingtothecollegiatelevel.ChrishasbeenaWPBFCmembermostofhislifeandhaspostedseveralnotableanglingachievementsthroughtheyears.Hisclubrecordsetting27poundsnookcaughton4spintacklebackin2005andhisWPBFCJuniorAngleroftheYeartitlein2006areamongthehighlights.SoitisnosurprisethatChrisisnowamemberoftheFloridaAtlanticUniversityFAUbassshingteam.ItallstartedwhenChrisreceivedhisfreshmanscheduleatFAUandrealizedhehadhugegapsbetweenclasses.Withtimetokillhedidsomeexploringaroundthecampusandcameacrossafewponds.SohetossedashingpoleinthecarandinbetweenclasseshewouldrelaxunwindanddosomebassshingsaidMattCardellaChrisdad.Asitturnsouttheshingwasveryproductiveinmorewaysthanhecouldhaveimagined.ChriscaughttheeyeofJimLanzaaUniversityPoliceemployeeavidbassshermanandownerofDirtyBirdLures.JimbegansupplyingChriswithdifferentluresforeldtesting.ChrisalsometVanceDimartiafellowstudent.VancegrewupinCaliforniaandmovedtoFloridainhopesofpursingacareerasaprofessionalgolfer.VancebecamehookedonbassshingafterdiscoveringsomeofFloridaslegend-arygolfcourseponds.ItwasntlongbeforethetwobeganaBassCluboncampus.NotlongafterthatthepairdiscoveredtheFLWCollegeBassTour.Thetourishighlyorganizedandconsistsofmorethan550clubsnationwide.Theyoungmenarenowpreparingfortheirsecondyearonthetour.GrowingupshinginshoreandinthebackcountrywithmybrotherNickhasreallyhelpedmequiteabitsaidChriswhowillbeshingfromaHellsBayWatermanskiffthiscomingseasonbringingabackcountrylooktothebassshingworld.AnotheradvantagetheFAUteamhasisthatVancelikeNickshesrighthandedandChrissheslefthanded.Thisallowsthembothtoefcientlycoverashorelinewithoutinterferingwithoneanother.VancelikestoworkajigslowinheavycoverwhileIprefertonessesoftplasticsjustlikesnookshingaddedChriswhentalkingtactics.IfyouwanttofollowChrisonthetourjoinhisfacebookpageatTheBassFishingClubatFAU.GoodluckChrisyourWPBFCfriendsarerootingforyouCardellaonFAUBassTeamChrisCardellaVanceDimartiMcLeanAddstoClubsBurgeeCollectionTheWPBFCsextensivecollectionofnauticalburgeesrecentlyexpandedthankstomemberMarkMcLean.AsayoungsheriesresearcherMcLeanspenttimepromot-ingtheNMFScooperativegamefishtaggingprogramthroughoutFlorida....andcol-lectedburgeesalongtheway
