39TightLinesBulletin-2012AYearInReviewPBCFFAwardsScholarshipsProceedsfromtheannualPalmBeachCountyKDWClassichavegonetosupportawidevarietyofPBCFFcon-servationandeducationinitiativesthroughtheyears.OneofthoseareasofsupporthasbeengearedtowardscollegeboundstudentsfromtheCityofRivieraBeachthroughthecitysscholarshipfund.A2000contributionwasmadethisyeartotwoworthystudentsAnthonyWood-sidewhowillbeattendingFloridaSouthernCollegeandVanessaBasswhowillbeattendingPalmBeachStateCollege.Vanessascareergoalistoonedaybecomeamarineveterinarian.Over15000hasbeendonatedtothecitysscholarshipfundsincetheKDWClassicbegan.ThePalmBeachCountyFishingFoundationhasbeenawardingmarinebiologyscholarshipsatPalmBeachAtlanticUniversitysince1994.Thefoun-dationisproudtoannouncethatJessicaPinderfromRoyalPalmBeachisthisyearsrecipientofthe1250award.TherewereseveraloutstandingcandidatesthisyearwhichmadetheselectionprocessquitechallengingfortheBoardofDirectors.Jessicawasawonderfulchoice.ShesalreadyjumpedonboardasaFishingClubvolunteer-doinganoutstandingjobcollectingdolphindataatthisyearsPalmBeachCountyKDWClassicandworkingtheFishMorphologystationduringourannualKidsFishingDayprogram.ImsurewellbeseeingmoreofherinthefuturesinceshelivesnearbyandplanstocontinuevolunteeringsaidboardchairmanPeteSchulz.TheFishingClubsfoundationhasbeenawardingtheCaptainAlNathanMemorialScholarshiptoagraduatestudentatFloridaAtlanticUniversitysince2003.ThisyearsrecipientofthatawardisJessicaCusick.The2500scholarshipaidedJessicawiththecompletionofhermastersthesisproject.Myresearchinvolvedlookingattheaggressivebehaviorbetweentwospeciesofdolphinbottlenoseandspotted.Ilookedatwhichindividu-alsparticipatedthebehaviorsthatwereusedduringaggressionandhowaggressionchangedovertime.CusicksresearchtookplaceintheBaha-masincollaborationwiththeWildDolphinProject.Thisscholarshipwascrucialtomakingmyresearchpossible.ThePBCFFBoardofDirectorshasapproveda500contributioninmemoryofthelateLeahSchadtotheFriendsoftheGaleAcademyofEnvironmentalScienceandTechnologyatForrestHillCommunityHighSchool.Thiswillbeanannualscholarshipcontributionpendingboardapprovaleachyear.LeahSchadwhopassedawayin2008wasawell-knownenvironmentalistandveryactiveFishingClubvolunteer.WelookforwardtobuildingarelationshipwithstudentsatForrestHillHighSchool.ItisourhopethatsomeofthemwillgetinvolvedinprogramslikeKidsFishingDayorourenvironmentalenhancementeffortsintheLakeWorthLagoon.ThisisawonderfulwaytorememberourdearfriendLeahSchadsaidWPBFCPresidentTomTwyford.TomTwyfordwithFAUscholarshipwinnerJessicaCusickDr.RayWaldnerlTomTwyfordrpresentPBAUstudentJessicaPinderwithher2012scholarshipaward.KDWsupportsRivieraBeachScholarshipFundNewScholarshipHonorsLeahSchadFloridaAtlanticUniversityPalmBeachAtlanticUniversity MarineYardSale2012EachspringtheFishingClubisthesiteofauniqueculturaleventthathasbecomequitepop-ularwithinourcommunityespeciallyforthoselookingforbargainsonanythingrelatedtoboat-ingshingordiving.TheannualMarineYardSaleafundraisingeventforthePalmBeachCountyFishingFoundationdidnotdisappointattendeesthisyear...thepickinswereasgoodaseverNearlytwohundredpeoplewerewaitinginlinebeforethegateopened.Afeedingfrenzysoonfollwedandthenetresultwasare-cordsetting20000raisedforthefoundation.Thankyoutoallwhosogenerouslydonatedunwant-edmarineitemsandtothosewhovolunteeredtheirtimetomaketheeventsosuccesfulandfunDontforgetdonationsforthiseventareacceptedyeararound 41TightLinesBulletin-2012AYearInReviewQuiteacontrasttothetwelve12two-hourtripsweruntoday.WealsorealizedthatwithoutaneducationalcomponenttheprogramwasnotasmeaningfulasitshouldbesaidWPBFCPresidentTomTwyford.InafewshortyearstheFloridaFishandWildlifeConservationCommis-sioncameonboardasaprogrampartnerandbroughttheirsuccessfulKidsFishingClinicformatintothefold.ThismadetheintroductoryexperiencecompleteaddedTwyford.Knottyinghowtocastashingrodhowtobaitahookhandsoninstructionusingspinninggearandareviewofwhatkindofitemsshouldbeintheirtackleboxaresomeofthepracticallessonsthatarenowastandardpartoftheprogram.TheFishingClubestablisheditscharitableafliatethePalmBeachCountyFishingFoundationin1990andallfutureKidsFishingDayeventswereconductedunderthisnewcharitableentity.ThecreationofthePalmBeachCountyFishingFoundationgaveustheabilitytosolicitsupportfromawideraudience.MuchofwhattheFishingClubwasdoingandcontinuestodointhecommunityischaritable.ItwassomethingweneededtodosaidWPBFCBoardmemberandformerchairmanJohnJolley.HoweverKidsFishingDayismuchmorethananglinginstruction.TheprogramhasbecomeanoutdoorclassroomthatalsoincludeslessonsonshmorphologyethicalanglingpracticesboatingsafetyandthefunctionofmangrovesandoystersintheLakeWorthLagoon.OneofthehighlightsoftheprogrameachyearistheinteractionbetweenkidsandanimalsatthemarinetouchtankwhereFWCbiologiststeachkidstheimportanceofmarinehabitat.Thekidsgettoseeandtouchavarietyofmarinecrittersatthisstationwhichneverfailstoproducesomeofthemostentertainingfacialexpressionsoftheprogram.ThemessagethatisemphasizedatthisboothisIfthereisnohabitatthentherearenosh.Eventheadultchaperonesandvolunteerswalkawayfromtheseeducationalstationshavinglearnedsomethingnew.Sincemanyofthekidswhopartici-patemostlyages8to12yearsoldcomefrominner-cityareasanewboothpromotinggangpreventionwasaddedthisyearthankstothesupportofthePalmBeachCountySheriffsOfceandaLawEnforcementTrustFundgrant.Thisistheperfectagetoreachouttothekidsandletthemknowwhatthewarningsignsareandwhytheyshouldstayawayfromgangs.Goingshingisagreatuseoftheirtimeandprogramslikethisserveasawonderfulintroduction.ThisisawonderfulopportunityyouareprovidingthekidsofourcommunitysaidPBSOGangPreventionCoordinatorMarciaBahia.Theeventmovedtoanewvenuethisyearaftermanyyearsofconduct-ingtheprograminLantanasBicentennialPark.WeweredisplacedbytheconstructionontheEastOceanAvenueBridge.LantanahasbeenincrediblysupportiveandwearesoverythankfulforthetownssupportalltheseyearsbutitwasjustnotpracticaltotrytoholdtheeventinthesamelocationsaidWPBFCChairmanPeteSchulz.TheTownofLakeParkwelcomedtheeventwithopenarmsandLakeParkHarborMarinaprovedtobeanidealvenue.TheprogramwillreturntoLakeParknextyearonJuly30th31standAugust1st.SupportfromgroupsliketheMarineIndustriesAssociationFishFloridatheLakeWorthKDWFishingTournamentandDelrayYachtCruisestonameafewplusscoresofindividualdonorsiswhathasgiventheFishingClubsfoundationtheabil-itytoprovidethisprogramfreeofchargeforthepast25years.ThisnancialsupportcombinedwithanarmyofenthusiasticvolunteersiswhatmakesitallworksaidTwyford.Mostofthesekidsarelikelittlespongessoak-ingupallthesenewexperiences.Ithinkeveryonewhoseestheprograminactionunderstandshowrewardingitistoseethesmilesandknowthatwearemakingadifferenceinthecommunity.KidsFishingDay......continuedfrompage1
